HICKORY STRINGS EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH PROGRAMS

Artist Development Workshops

Ideal for instrumentalists, Hickory Strings Artist Development Workshops encourage musicians to write music and develop their creative voice.  Through demonstration and guided group activities, the duo shares their songwriting process and provides students with concrete tools to develop their musical ideas.  The workshop format is adaptable to accommodate varying ages and ability levels from middle school to college graduate students.  Depending on class size and teacher discretion, students have the opportunity to play Hickory Strings repertoire, deepening their understanding.

“The presentation that Hickory Strings gave for the undergraduate and graduate students in Longy School of Music’s String Seminar was a big hit.  [Their] engaging stage presence, and their skill in explaining how they create their fresh and appealing music, made for a uniquely enjoyable show.” – Janet Packer, String Department Chair, Longy School of Music

“Thank you so much! The students were inspired, and so was I to create more opportunities for them in the classroom to compose.  The class had a lot of fun!” – Laura Umbro Orchesta Director, Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School

Patches the Elf: An Interactive Musical Fairytale

Picture
Patches the Elf: An Interactive Musical FairytalePatches the Elf is a unique program designed for young children (Pre-K to 3rd grade).  Accompanied by live original music byHickory Strings, an animated and engaging narrator tells the story of an elf named Patches who goes on the greatest adventure of his life.

In this highly interactive musical fairytale, the narrator invites the children to help mime and act out key parts of the story so they can help Patches overcome obstacles he is faced with.  Throughout the story the children listen to the music of Hickory Strings, which not only compliments the emotional arc of Patches’ journey, but also makes accessible a genre of music that is often difficult to approach from such an early age.

“A wonderful and imaginative storytelling journey.  Patches is a rich and high-culture experience for both children and adults.” - Ellen Thompson, Director of Visitor Education and Programs, Boston Children’s Museum

“I absolutely enjoyed the performances…a delightful work and very engaging for the audience, both children and adults.” –Myran Parker-Brass, Director of Education and Community Programs, Boston Symphony Orchestra
